Makhluk raksasa kecil asing ini telah mengubah tanggapan para saintis mengenai kehidupan di bawah lautan bumi kita yang paling dalam yang belum pernah diketahui sejak 40 tahun lalu. Polychaeta, atau cacing skala yang berukuran dua atau tiga sentimeter panjang telah berevolusi untuk bertahan menghadapi tekanan yang sangat hebat tinggal lebih daripada 1,000 meter di bawah laut di mana sinar matahari langsung tidak pernah menembusinya. Daripada tanah terbiar gersang, para penyelidik telah menemui komuniti pelbagai makhluk yang tinggal di sekitar lohong hidroterma.
